Types of bank card fraud

A lot of citizens today have a bank card – debit or credit, or both. However, bank cards are a fairly new phenomenon in Russian reality, and one hundred percent protection against stealing money from them has not yet been invented. Banks are constantly complicating the protection of cards, but fraudsters, in turn, come up with how to get around it. If you are a holder of a bank card, then it is useful for you to find out about the types of bank card fraud in order to protect yourself from trouble.
Skimming involves the installation of special devices on ATMs, through which criminals receive information about the card. These are the invoice keyboard (very similar to the real one), and a device for reading card data, which is installed on the card reader (where you insert the card). Instead of a keyboard, a miniature camera can be installed, which will record the process of entering a PIN code.
Note! If you use such an ATM, fraudsters can easily get a pin code, card number, and other data. Subsequently, they can make a duplicate card and withdraw money from an ATM, or simply use the card data to spend money on anything on the Internet.
But after all, there are cameras on all ATMs, so why aren’t criminals detected during the installation of skimming equipment? The fact is that there may be around a hundred ATMs in one city, and it’s unrealistic to follow them in real time. The bank, of course, will check the recordings from the camera, but after the fraudsters do their job.
A few tips that will help you not to become a victim of skimming:
If possible, do not use ATMs too often. It is better to use ATMs in bank branches (however, this does not fully guarantee). It is easiest for criminals to install their equipment on street ATMs, on ATMs at train stations, in the subway, etc.
Inspect the ATM carefully before inserting the card there. You can try to pry the keyboard, if it is real, then nothing will happen, but if it is fraudulent, it can move a little. Many ATMs have antiskimmingovye devices (as a rule, green lining with the lock icon). Sometimes fraudsters make the same, only use them for their own purposes (and it is very difficult to distinguish). You can slightly pull this green lining. This will be firmly kept on the ATM, and fraudulent may falter or even fall away.
Always properly cover the keyboard with your second hand when entering your PIN.
Chip cards are safer than simple magnetic cards. Therefore, it is better to use them.
Use all possible bank services that will protect you from skimming. Set a limit on transactions (for example, no more than any amount per day), use SMS confirmation of transactions.
Phantom ATM
We are talking about ATMs, which only seem to be so. They are usually installed in places where there are no other, real ATMs, and where the territory is not controlled by any security service. As a rule, a little-known bank is chosen or it does not exist at all (in the hope that someone will simply want to urgently withdraw money regardless of the bank).
The usual menu appears on the screen. The person inserts the card and an error message is displayed. Suspecting nothing, he leaves. Meanwhile, a fake ATM has already read all the data from the card. Now, fraudsters can only make a duplicate card.
Criminals it is not difficult to make a duplicate card
To recognize such an ATM can be quite easily on the following grounds:
The design moves freely, unlike real ATMs, which are fixed. In addition, it is quite easy, because inside there is no safe for cash.
There is no power source nearby (conventional ATMs are connected to the power grid).
There is no information about the bank that installed the ATM. Or the design of the ATM is very different from the usual.
Location – unguarded freely visited territory.
Passer help
Passer help
The essence of this type of fraud is to install a device on an ATM, which blocks the card and does not give it back. A person is lost, unsuccessfully trying to extract his card. And here he comes to the aid of a “good” crook, handing out various tips and posing as an experienced ATM user. In the process of “help”, he will press different buttons. A bewildered person usually easily agrees to the introduction of a PIN code, which the criminal remembers. For some time, the process of “help” continues, after which the fraudster leaves, advising him to contact the bank. The distracted person leaves, and the fraudster calmly pulls out a card and withdraws cash from it. And if you do not have time to remember the pin-code – it does not matter. After all, you can pay with a card in the store (not all stores need to enter a PIN) or buy something on the Internet.
